Composites are more conservative, meaning that less tooth structure needs to be removed. The more conservative the treatment, the better it is for the long-term health of the tooth and the less it is weakened. Another reason for the shift toward composite resins, or “bondings,” is that they are tooth-colored and therefore more aesthetically pleasing. Bonding can also be used to repair small chips and fractures, especially on the front teeth.
It is important to note that there have been no clinical studies showing that amalgam, or “silver fillings,” have adverse effects on your health. This is a common misconception.

We are often asked, “Should I have my silver fillings replaced?” The simple answer is that if the existing filling is in good condition, with no decay or fractures, it can remain in place without any issues. If you have aesthetic concerns and are unhappy with how they look, they can be replaced with composite bonding, but this would be for cosmetic purposes only.
